BANDARANAIKE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (BIA) DEVELOPMENT PROJECT, TERMINAL 2, PIER 2 AND PIER 3, KATUNAYAKA, SRI LANKA

Bandaranaike International Airport is the main international airport in Sri Lanka which is located in Katunayake, 22 miles (35 km) north of Colombo. It is administered by Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd (AASL). The project is the expansion of the Bandaranaike International Airport which consist of the construction of a new multi-level Passenger Terminal Building (Terminal 2), including new Passenger Piers (Pier 2 and Pier 3 normally referred to as a concourse(s)), with a connecting concourse link to the existing terminal building which is Terminal 1 and Pier 1. The new project total floor area is approximately 1,964,123 sqft. The capacity of the Bandaranaike International Airport which presently stands at 6 Million passenger movements per annum will be increased to 15 Million after the development. Green Technologies has been working with the design team since 2014, with the project now in the tender process, having completed the Detailed Design Stage. Construction is targeted to be commencing in July 2017, for a 3-year construction period. The AASL has set the goal of achieving LEED Certification for the Bandaranaike International Airport Development , Terminal 2, Pier 2 and Pier 3 Project, particularly the grade of “Silver” under the LEED 2009 New Constructions and Major Renovations Rating System. Green Technologies FZCO, an Engineering, LEED and Sustainability consultancy firm with extensive experience in delivering iconic Sustainability, Engineering and LEED projects in the Middle East and Asia, was engaged by Japan Airport Consultants to provide of Green LEED consultancy services, to assist them in achieving the goal of LEED Silver Certification.

Key Sustainable Features of the Bandaranayaka International Airport Development Terminal2, Pier 2 and Pier 3 Project includes:

  • Energy saving of 25% when compared with ASHRAE 90.1-2007 baseline building.
  • Water saving of 40% when compared to EPAct 1992 baseline.
  • Preferred Parking for low emitting and fuel efficient vehicles
  • Landscaping with high drought tolerant vegetation
  • Use of Non-Potable water for Irrigation
  • Commissioning of all installed Energy related systems
  • Use of Energy Star Rated Office Equipment/Appliances
  • Over 75% diversion of Construction waste from landfill through recycling
  • Use of Zero HCFC and CFC refrigerants
  • Enhanced Indoor Air Quality for human safety and comfort
  • CO2 sensors and outdoor airflow monitoring devices
  • Use of low emitting, low VOC paints and coatings, adhesives and sealants
  • Thermal Comfort Design as per ASHRAE 55-2004
  • Green Education and Housekeeping Program
